Chelle has become enthralled (synonyms be damned) with the Hitchhiker's series, finishing a book often in one or two sittings. Granted they're not that long, but that's still a lot of reading in one spell. I still haven't started the first book in earnest, but I've been busy with my beautiful vampires.
Work has been sucking in varying degrees lately. Some days it's particularly shitty, other days it's almost fun. Either way, my schedule is a cake walk and I generally enjoy playing janitor.
So, other than Anne Rice and Douglas Adams, are there any other modern authors that I should be paying particular attention to during this literary reform I'm subjecting myself to?

Douglas Adams is modern? :P
The only one I can think of that you haven't read is Frank Herbert, but then again, you have that strange hatred for him. XD

I recall you enjoy The Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte, so I'd recommend (if you haven't already) The Flanders Panel and The Fencing Master. Don't know if you'd enjoy either those but I do highly recommend them.
I'd also recommend Terry Pratchett.
*blinks for a sec* Your post made me want to go back and re-read the Anne Rice books I have and continue with the others. x.X;

bleh... I couldn't stand "Queen of the Damned". Then again, perhaps context was required.
My favorite modern author is Barbara Kingsolver, personally; (good book: Poisonwood Bible). Probably my favorite modern genre author is either Sean Stewart (see: Ressurection Man, Night Watch) or Iain M. Banks (see: The Player of Games, Excession.) I also enjoyed "Kavalier and Clay" and "Winter's Tale" a lot.
I'm not sure whether you mean just recent books or recent mass-market books, though. For that, I'm horrible snob.
