The twin-blog setup I've been toying with for several weeks has finally come to fruition. Things aren't exactly as I had hoped, but the problems are miniscule and I can deal with them. Now mine and Michelle's blog are accessible through one easy-to-find page. :)
Fucking Hollywood...
I finished reading The Count of Monte Cristo this morning. Rarely does a book move me in the way that this one has, and I can't wait until I can put aside a bit of cash to pick up some more Dumas to read. The (abridged) 509 pages that I waded through seemed to flip easier and easier as the book went along. The storyline is engrossing and by the time you've reached the end of the first 50 chapters, you start to become so embedded in the world and the people that you actually forget who it is that you're supposed to be rooting for. After finishing the book, I sat down and watched the movie again. Short of the character names and basic overall plot (Dantes recieves a traitorous letter from Napoleon, is decieved by his friends, imprisoned, swears revenge and gets it) nothing is similar. Every scene in the movie was invented in some way and the movie itself in no way resembles the book. Upon a bit of introspection, I realized that unless you had read the book and loved it dearly, The Count of Monte Cristo would make a piss-poor excuse for a movie. It started off at a snails pace for the first 10 chapters, then raised to a normal heart-rate for the remainder of the book. There was no great conflict, no denoument to speak of. Simply a beginning, middle and end that engrossed you for the duration of the 71 chapters. Rarely does a simple entertainment move me to tears, but when I finished reading today, I quietly wept.
That is all...
